The SJD program gives students an opportunity to work towards a doctoral degree in law with a combination of independent research and coursework. Physical presence in Budapest is required during the first three years of the SJD program, except during official research periods abroad. During the second year of their doctoral studies candidates are encouraged to spend an academic semester abroad to do research at a renowned law school or research institution. The SJD degree is awarded on the basis of successful public defense of the doctoral thesis (dissertation) before a panel composed of internal and external experts.
