Károly Bárd is professor, chair of the Human Rights Program and co-director (with Renáta Uitz) of the clinical specialization at CEU Legal Studies Department. He started his career at the Faculty of Law of Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest. Between 1990 and 1997 he served as vice-minister and later as deputy state secretary in the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Hungary. He worked as Research Director at the Constitutional and Legal Policy Institute of the Open Society Institute (Budapest) for more than 3 years. Upon the request of international organizations - such as the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the European Commission, the OECD, the World Bank, etc. - he has taken part in numerous projects as expert in criminal justice, human rights and international humanitarian law, court reform, judicial independence. He was member of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance; between 1999 and 2004 he served as Vice-Secretary General of the International Association of Penal Law (AIDP). Professor Bárd is member of the Board of Directors of the European Institute for Crime Prevention and Crime Control affiliated with the United Nations (HEUNI). Currently he serves as Pro-rector for Hungarian and European Union Affairs of the Central European University.
