John has worked for CEU since 1998, and has taught students in most departments of the university. Prior to CEU he worked as an educational specialist for the British Council in universities in China, designing curricula and teacher training courses, and he has extensive experience in the region, having worked in the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Estonia, and in Hungary in the 1980's.

In addition to his core duties at CEU, John has also worked as a trainer and advisor on policy-related and curricular aspects of academic writing in Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kosovo, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia, and has been employed as an external consultant to evaluate writing support at CERGE-EI in Prague and the American University in Bulgaria.

He has published on writing support initiatives in the region and the factors that determine their development. He has also researched the interplay between academic languages and the nature of academic multiliteracy and L2 monoliteracy, thus contributing in various ways to the debates on the global hegemony of English and its social and political consequences.
