On 5 November 2012, SPP hosted a discussion among CEU faculty, led by George Soros and Philippe Schmitter, on the implications of the European crisis for democracies and open societies on our continent. The discussion centered around the question how to tackle the weakness displayed by national institutions that has both fueled and been exacerbated by the current crisis. The event was moderated by SPP Dean Wolfgang Reinicke.

George Soros’ views on how to resolve the ‘tragedy of the European Union’ have been published in the New York Review of Books.

Philippe Schmitter had recently given thought to the plausibility of a ‘crisis triangle’ – the collapse of the Euro, the collapse of the European Union and the collapse of democracy in its member states.
