Bronisław Geremek Fellowship
The Institute for Human Sciences, Vienna (IWM) has published its next call for application to foster study on Polish heritage in European tradition. The fellowship enables young Polish doctoral or post-doctoral researchers to become members of the international scholarly community of the IWM to work on a research project of their choice. The fellowship is open to all academic disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Deadline for application: April 1, 2011.

Call for Applications
Bronisław Geremek (1932 - 2008), a scholar, intellectual and politician, a passionate Pole and exemplary European, was a source of intellectual inspiration as well as a model for prudent action and moral decency for many. Geremek was a supporter of the IWM almost from its inception and a member of its Board of Patrons until his death. The fellowship program shall commemorate his name and his work.
1. Objective
The Bronisław Geremek Fellowship program is to foster study and reflection of Polish national heritage in the context of European tradition. The fellowship enables young Polish doctoral or post-doctoral researchers to become members of the international, multidisciplinary scholarly community of the IWM to work on a research project of their choice. The fellowship is open to all academic disciplines in the humanities and social sciences; research proposals related to one of the IWM’s main fields are strongly encouraged (for details please see www.iwm.at/research.htm).
2. Conditions
The Bronisław Geremek Fellows will be invited to spend the academic year 2011/12 (ten months from September 2011 - June 2012) at the IWM to pursue their research projects while working in residence. The fellows will receive a stipend in the amount of € 2.000 per month to cover accommodation, living expenses, travel, health insurance and incidentals during the stay in Vienna. Furthermore, the IWM will provide a personal office, IT infrastructure, access to the internet, in-house research facilities and other relevant sources in Vienna. The fellows will participate in the scholarly community and activities of the Institute.
3. Eligibility
Candidates for the Bronisław Geremek Fellowship - must currently pursue a doctoral degree or have recently obtained a Ph.D. in any discipline in the humanities or social sciences.
- must be Polish citizens or permanently reside in Poland
- must not be older than 35 years
4. Application
The application consists of the following materials:
1. the application form (please download from http://info.iwm.at/Geremek11.zip)
2. a concise research proposal in English (max. 4 pages, double-spaced, A4) including
- the scientific problem(s) addressed
- critical consideration of current relevant literature
- research goals and expected results
- work and time schedule; if the duration of the project exceeds the ten-month term at the IWM, please indicate which part shall be completed during the fellowship
3. a curriculum vitae
4. two letters of recommendation by scholars familiar with the applicant’s academic work

5. Selection
The finalist will be selected by a jury of experts consisting of: Marcin Krol, Professor of History of Ideas, Warsaw University Pawel Potoroczyn, Director of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, Warsaw; Timothy D. Snyder, Professor of History, Yale University; Permanent Fellow, Institute for Human Sciences Jerzy Szacki, Professor of Sociology, Warsaw School of Social Psychology Adam Zagajewski, poet, Professor at the Committee for Social Thought, University of Chicago.
Applicants will be notified of the jury decision by June/July 2011; the jury is not required to publicly justify its decisions.
The Bronisław Geremek Fellowship is financed by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in cooperation with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
