Former CEU Trustee Gyorgy Enyedi Dies at 83

Dr. Gyorgy Enyedi, a distinguished Hungarian geographer and economist who served on the CEU Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2007, died on Sept. 10. Enyedi, a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, received numerous awards at home and abroad, including the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic and the Laureat d’Honneur of the International Geographic Union, where he served as vice president. Author of 40 books and more than 300 other publications, Enyedi is the most cited Hungarian geographer, and played a decisive role in the development of regional science as an independent discipline. He was an honorary member of the Société Géographique, the Royal Geographical Society, and the Academia Europæa. He served as president of the Hungarian committee of UNESCO from 1998 to 2002, and was a visiting scholar in various leading U.S. and French universities, spending seven years lecturing in different countries.
