Google Day

On 31 May Google Hungary held its first “Google Day” at WAM Design Center, with the aim of showcasing the Internet's influence and power on the economy, business, society and culture. Kate Coyer, Director, Center for Media and Communication Studies (CMCS), CEU, organized and moderated a break-out panel on “Education and the Internet.” Speakers of the panel were Tibor Voros, Senior Lecturer of IT Management, CEU Business School: “New Models of Case Study Learning and Simulation  in Management Education;” Kathryn Mathe, Researcher, Open Society Archives at CEU (OSA): “A Forensic Approach to Online Sources;” and Charaf Hassan, ICT Strategic Program Director, Budapest Technical University: “The Harmony: R&D, Knowledge, Education.” As education is strongly relying on the Internet as a powerful means of obtaining information and interactive teaching, the speakers presented some of the tools and best practices available to education professionals on how they use the Internet as a medium, and innovation in the field. The presenters drew conclusions on open access and digitalization efforts around texts and knowledge in general to make information more widely accessible, new models of business school education as an example of classroom innovation as well as in the delivery of MBAs, and technical education in higher education and preparing students not just academically but also according to the requirements of the market. 

The audience consisted of both Hungarian and international participants and speakers, from the world of academia, industry, policy making and in general those interested in IT and the range of online practices. The other break-out panels of the day focused on the topics of Society, Culture, Media; and their relations to the world of Internet. The grand panel session speakers included among others Mohammad Gawdat, Managing Director for South and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa/Head of Emerging Markets Council, Google: “An insoder’s view of the Internet;” Zoltan Kaprinay, Bonusz Brigad: “Social Shopping Behaviour;” Peter Soos, Boston Consulting Group: “Internet’s Impact on the Economy;” and Michael T. Jones, Google: “Technology Through Google’s Eyes.”
