CEU Summer University 2010 Opening

2010 Summer University Opening

The 15th annual Summer University (SUN) was officially opened on July 5, 2010 by Liviu Matei, Chief Operating Officer and Professor, Department of Public Policy. This year SUN offers 19 courses, bringing together 580 participants from 89 countries.

Liviu Matei welcomed participants and introduced them to CEU and its summer program. He pointed out how the summer school serves as the extension of CEU’s core mission, bringing together and stimulating interaction among junior and senior scholars, professionals from various areas and NGO activists, in a special learning environment. The CEU Summer School is also designed as a laboratory for experimenting with new discipline areas, topics and approaches otherwise not included in CEU’s regular curriculum, but which could potentially later become a part.

Following the welcome remarks, a public roundtable discussion on “How can political WILL overcome bureaucratic WON'T ?” was presented by the Integrity Summer School. Panelists included Vaira Vïke-Freiberga, former president of Latvia (1999-2007), Abdul Tejan-Cole, Africa Regional Director, Open Society Institute, New York, former Anti-Corruption Commissioner, Sierra Leone, and Hadeel Qazzaz, Program Director, Tiri Pro Poor Integrity Program, also a specialist in education, gender, and development, and an activist in the Palestinian women's movement as well as in the Palestinian civil society movement. The discussion was moderated by Fredrik Galtung, Director, SUN Integrity Summer School, Chief Executive, Tiri-Making Integrity Work, London. After the panel discussion questions were taken from the audience and a lively question and answer period ended the event.
