The two Human Rights courses (Litigation and Drug Policy) of the 2011 Summer University program present a joint panel discussion moderated by Desmond Cohen, Advisor OSI Global Drug Policy Program.

The panel will be opened by John Shattuck, President and Rector of CEU, who will also be included as one of the panelists.

Panelists:

Damon Barrett, Project Director, International Centre on Human Rights and Drug Policy

James A. Goldston, Executive Director, Open Society Justice Initiative, New York

Wiktor Osiatynski, Visiting Professor, Legal Studies Department, CEU;

John Shattuck, President and Rector of CEU

Panelists will reflect on their personal experience of human rights situations in various conflict regions of the world. These personal statements argue why HR issues are important and rely on the panelists' experience of how to defend them in difficult situations. John Shattuck will focus on Bosnia, Wiktor Osiatynski on HR issues in Poland both under communism and subsequently, Damon Barrett will discuss the role of human rights in relation to policy for illicit drugs, and James Goldston will raise issues about the role of litigation in remedying human rights abuses, which is essential if these are to be addressed effectively.
