Promoting Integration Of Migrants And Minorities Through Media
We cordially invite you on the 30th of March 2011 to the Gellner room, CEU, Nador 9 at 17:30
To be part of a seminar "PROMOTING INTEGRATION OF MIGRANTS AND MINORITIES THROUGH MEDIA" organised by Centre for Environment and Security (CENSE) together with International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Center for Independent Journalism.
THE MEDIA do not onlyextend ‘messages in space’ but also maintain ‘society in time’.
THE MEDIA might confirmthe values that audiences share, and enhance social cohesion.
THE MEDIA may foster theintegration of immigrants, asylum seekers, ethnic and national minorities.
THE MEDIA are in a position to play a crucial mediating role between immigrant and host societies.
THE MEDIA might have thepotential to foster these processes in several ways. The formation and maintenance of group cohesion might be encouraged through the outlets of a particular minority, while social
integration could be promoted through themainstream media, minority
contents, and targeted campaigns.
In fact, feeling of under-representation by and in the media leads to a poor and strained relationship with the mainstream media and culturalinstitutions among migrants and minorities alike.
Hence the media can be seen as a tool potentially capable of fostering intra-group cohesion on the one hand, and facilitating intergroup cohesion on the other.
The representatives of the International Organization for Migration and
the Center for Independent Journalism speak about their efforts to achieve morediverse, responsible media coverage on immigration and minorities as well as on how to increase the understanding of these issues by the general public.
