Nationalism Studies Program This lecture reviews the political and legal responses to the Islamic headscarf in Western Europe. Particular attention is given to recent attempts in France to restrict the 'burka' in public spaces.
Christian Joppke is a professor of political science at the American University of Paris. He is one of Europe's leading authorities on citizenship, immigration, and ethnic minority integration. His two most recent books are 'Veil: Mirror of Identity' (2009) and 'Citizenship and Immigration' (2010), both published by Polity Press.
