European Iconography: An Introduction to Europe's Pictorial Traditions

In his guest lecture, architect/visual artist Chris Herdel discusses the importance of images in Europe's history and how they have helped create and shape individual and communal identity. He will discuss different iconographic categories - the social image, the heroic image, the environmental image - and touch on iconography as it relates to both modern art and architecture.

Chris Herdel started working as an architect in 1978. In 1985, he launched a multidisciplinary company of architects and engineers working in the field of ecological building technologies. In 1993 he founded a video film production company specializing in documentary films on architecture (documentation of construction sites, reconstruction technologies of historical buildings), urban development and ecology. Since the 1990s Herdel has lectured at various universities, including Mimar Sinan University Istanbul, New York University , Prague, Transcarpathian Academy for Fine Arts, Ushgorod, Ukraine. He is also a freelance photographer and a painter.
