The Public Voice: Global Privacy Standards in a Global World

The international civil society coalition The Public Voice will stage a conference on Global Privacy Standards for a Global World in Madrid today, which is supported by major NGOs, advocacy groups and academic institutions in the field of information privacy (Livewebcast here). Kristina Irion of the CEU Center for Media and Communications Studies (CMCS) is one of the members of the event’s Organizing Committee.

The conference will be held in conjunction with the Annual International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners, which brings together the highest authorities and institutions on data protection and privacy and where a joint proposal on “International Standards for the Protection of Privacy and Personal Data” will be tabled. The organizer of that conference, the Spanish Data Protection Agency, also sponsors the Public Voice conference.

The aims of the Public Voice conference are to review the privacy developments of the past year and release the current edition of the Privacy and Human Rights report; to promote civil society participation in decisions concerning the protection of privacy as both a fundamental human right and an essential facilitator for a global economy; to develop global privacy standards in a global world; and to review and coordinate civil society involvement in privacy discussions in regional and other global arenas, such as the CoE, EU, APEC, IGF, OECD, ITU and ICANN. A Civil Society Declaration will be released during the conference.

In the winter term, Kristina Irion will be teaching a course on Information Privacy Protection.
