Program Description

The Course Development Competition is intended to encourage faculty from Eastern Europe, Southeastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and Mongolia to develop and introduce new university courses at their institutions. Applicants are invited to prepare a one or two semester long course in the discipline areas listed in our call for proposals. Proposed courses should be innovative in content, methodology and teaching approach.

The mission of the program is to contribute to the development of higher education in the regions mentioned above by increasing academics' capacity to introduce innovative, regionally relevant courses, modern teaching approaches and new academic areas in the curricula of their home universities..

The competition is open to individuals and groups for 10 month grants, which include monthly individual stipends, an allowance for book purchases, teaching materials, photocopying, etc., as well as additional travel costs and administrative expenses in the case of group grants. Grantees are not required to stay in Budapest during their grant period just to participate in two training workshops organized at the Central European University, Budapest on course design and teaching methodology.

The yearly call for proposals is announced each year in September/October. CDC grantees are selected through a competitive application process. . The course development budget proposals are negotiated individually via e-mail before the first workshop or during grantees' first visit to Budapest.

A special feature of the Course Development Competition is the Course Portfolio element which frames the whole grant. The portfolio method is based on the belief that each newly designed course, its teaching and its learning outcome is worthy of ongoing investigation and discussion as part of worthwhile academic or scholarly work of a faculty member. We ask the grantees to document the process of their work, in relation to course design, teaching and student learning and compile their portfolios along these three lines, 3-5 pages each. The two training workshops are designed to supply the grantees with the sufficient tools needed for this work.

Syllabi of the courses developed by CDC grantees are posted on the CRC website, while course readers and other printed teaching materials are available in the CRC resource room, located in the Library of the Central European University.
