Full description:

The aim of this course is to critically examine rural development as an object for policy making. The principal focus is on the former socialist countries where rural development poses especially tough problems. The twin policies of land privatization and the opening of borders to agricultural imports has put great strain on the viability of rural areas and countries throughout the region confront serious problems of de-population, under-employment and deteriorating services and infrastructure.
