Additional information:
During the semester, each student prepares a presentation of about 10 minutes covering the main chapter of his or her thesis; the text of the chapter is saved in Mededit-MA-2009/10-1YMA. This is not the introduction, conclusion, source introduction, or literature review, but the “meat” of the thesis. Each student must attend a consultation with Judith a few days before his/her presentation to review the academic-writing aspects of the chapter and must make sure that his/her supervisor receives a copy of the chapter in time to read it and return comments and suggestions. Each student serves as an opponent for one presentation. The opponent is expected to read the chapter and to deliver a critique focusing on the structure and content of the argument; formatting suggestions are also welcome but they should not be the main focus of the discussion. Every student attending the seminar is expected to read the chapter (on Mededit) and make comments during the discussion. Attendance is both collegial and required.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of seminar students should understand how to organize and formulate a piece of academic writing focused on a research problem. They should improve their skills in seminar level discussion.
Assessment :
The learning outcomes will be assessed through class participation, through the role of opponent, and through students’ ability to support their arguments during chapter presentations. Ultimately, the successful defense of the thesis will be another assessment.
