Full description:

The course traces the main stages in the evolution and the demise of the European political order from antiquity to the dissolution of the Concert of Europe. Its main task is to critically question the contention often found in International Relations theory that the 'history of the relations of states does not change over the millennia'. Without disputing the fact that throughout the millennia war- and peacemaking remained the dominant activities in the relations between autonomous political entities, such as cities or states, the course examines the differences in the understandings of the character of war and peace which characterised different stages in the evolution of the European political order.
