Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies (CEMS)
Central European University’s Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies (CEMS), emerging from CEU’s Center for Hellenic Traditions, promotes the study of the cultures and polities of the Eastern Mediterranean region (loosely defined) from antiquity into the early modern period. At present, reflecting the research interests of CEU faculty contributing to the center, special emphasis is placed on the study of ancient philosophy; the Later Roman Empire; the ‘Byzantine Commonwealth’; eastern Christianity; the Ottoman Empire, and their respective neighbouring and successor cultures and states.
