Center for Academic Writing

One of the most important skills CEU students need to acquire is that of writing well. Writing well does not just mean avoiding grammar mistakes; it means presenting and developing ideas clearly and logically. The Center for Academic Writing offers writing support for all students, from your first written assignments right through to the MA or PhD thesis. We work with faculty in each department to make sure students know and meet the writing standards expected of them. Our goal is to equip students with the skills they need to be proficient independent writers who can function effectively in the wider academic community after their graduation from CEU. In the words of writing center pioneer Steven North, "...we are more concerned with producing better academic writers than with producing better academic texts."

The Center's work is divided into three components:

  • taught courses in academic writing, including the Academic Writing for Graduate Students course at the beginning of the academic year, as well as thesis writing courses in the second semester and various one-off workshops and sessions throughout the year
  • individual writing consultations throughout the year
  • independent learning facilities, including a multimedia library with a wide range of materials, and an extensive self access website

These three components are closely interlinked to give CEU students the most effective training and support in academic writing and the independent study skills needed for MA and PhD level study.
