Reflections and proposals on file management

There are currently many methods to handle files on the pilot Website. The two directly competing ones are WebFM and IMCE. The advantages of WebFM are that it allows very easy file and directory management and permissions setting. Essentially you can drag and drop files into directories and easily attach them to the content. The disadvantage is that it currently does not integrate with TinyMCE, our editor.

The advantage of IMCE is that is easily integrates with TinyMCE and it is great for handling images. It does not allow easy manipulation of files and directories though (e.g. you cannot easily create a directory - although such a module is under development). You also cannot easy "attach" files to the nodes (although perhaps it is not really needed, but I am somehow "attached" to this idea).

Thus we may need to use both file managers for a while: WebFM to keep order in the files and IMCE - to incorporate them in the texts.

I suggest to disable the ability to upload files (through the standard upload module) for all normal users (except administrators and Early Adopters).

I also suggest to enable WebFM attachments only for content types where they are really needed (e.g. in Biblio and perhaps in Issues - any other ideas?)
