User authorisation through CEU Novell accounts

From March 24, 2009, user authorisation at the site is done through CEU Novell accounts. Basic data from these accounts (name, phone, email, position, unit and the official address) have been also transferred to Drupal accounts. If you experience difficulties with login please contact us.

Reflections and proposals on file management

There are currently many methods to handle files on the pilot Website. The two directly competing ones are WebFM and IMCE. The advantages of WebFM are that it allows very easy file and directory management and permissions setting. Essentially you can drag and drop files into directories and easily attach them to the content. The disadvantage is that it currently does not integrate with TinyMCE, our editor.

Political Economy Research Group (PERG) site goes online

The refreshed CEU Political Economy Research Group (PERG) website goes public. Congratulations to the PERG team for making it happen. The PERG site is part of the CEU Pilot minisite demonstrating its many opportunities for flexibility and interactivity.

Out-sourcing, co-sourcing and in-sourcing for Website development

In her excellent blog Having IT Your Way, Susan Gramm of Harvard Business Review considers the issue of outsourcing. She provides a very useful matrix explaining when a company should outsource:

Restructuring the Contributors Area

The Contributors' Area (minisite) has been restructured to simplify navigation and reduce menu clutter as follows:

Small updates to the main menus

I have done three updates to the main menus:

  • Moved My Publications from the Navigation to My CEU Web menu. I had some problems with this link in the past, so please test it and report any bugs;
  • Moved Image Galleries from the Navigation to the CEU Quick Links menu;
  • Re-arranged the Navigation menu so that the Log out item is the last one.

Entering contact information

I have noticed that many people enter contact information on their Webpages, e.g. "contact User at user@ceu.hu". This is ok on internal pages, but when entered on public pages it is likely to invite much spam. An alternative method to enable the reader contacting you without displaying your email address is through providing a link to your (or somebody's) contact form. E.g.

"For more questions contact  Aleh Cherp."

I have linked my name to user/4/contact, where "4" is my user ID number (UID). If you want to find out your UID, click on "My Profile and Account". If you want to know UID of another user find this user in a directory and click on his/her name, the UID will be seen from the URL.
