Admissions for 2010/2011: Deadlines and Process

Key admission dates for 2010/2011 

1. Application deadlines for degree programs (non-Erasmus Mundus)
  • January 25, 2010, Midnight Pacific Time (PST)
  • January 26, 2010, 9:00 a.m. Central European Time (CET)

For applicants to the Department of Legal Studies (with an exception of CEU graduates applying to the doctoral program).
For applicants who wish/are required to take the CEU-administered admissions examinations and/or are requesting exemption from the English language proficiency requirement.

NOTE: All applications from students asking for an exemption from the English language proficiency requirement (including native speakers) and submitted after the January 25 deadline and until March 16 will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis according to the CEU admissions regulations and in accordance with CEU’s non-discrimination policies.

  • March 16, 2010, Midnight Pacific Time (PST) / March 17, 2010, 9:00 a.m. Central European Time (CET): For applicants submitting applications complete with language scores and other applicable test scores.
  • March 16, 2010, Midnight Pacific Time (PST) / March 17, 2010, 9:00 a.m. Central European Time (CET): For CEU Master’s students and graduates applying to all doctoral programs except those listed below.
  • April 16, 2010: For applicants to the Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations, and to the PhD in Comparative Gender Studies submitting applications complete with language scores and other applicable test scores.

NOTE: Applications from students asking for an exemption from the English language proficiency requirement (including native speakers) and submitted after the January 25 deadline and by April 16 will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis according to the CEU admissions regulations and in accordance with CEU’s non-discrimination policies.

Individual CEU departments may provide additional, or extended application deadlines on a case-by-case basis. For further information, applicants should consult the webpages of the relevant department.

  • March 13, 2010: Institutional TOEFL and department-specific examinations.
  • After April 15, 2010: Admissions decisions are made available to candidates via the online application status tracking feature.
2. Application deadlines for Erasmus Mundus programs
  • March 16, 2010: For applicants to Mundus MAPP eligible for Erasmus Mundus "Category B" scholarships and self-financing students; for applicants to MESPOM eligible for "Category B" scholarships and self-financing students. Applications must be submitted complete with proofs of English proficiency.
3. Hungarian citizens

Applications from Hungarian students wishing to take part in the CEU-administered tests and submitted after the January 25 deadline and before February 15 will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis according to CEU admissions regulations and in accordance to CEU’s non-discrimination policies. After January 25 applicants need to request their participation at the CEU administed TOEFL and other admissions test via email to admissions@ceu.hu until February 15, 2010.

  • February 15, 2010: All Hungarian citizens wishing to apply for Hungarian-accredited two-year Master's programs must apply to CEU through the Online Application System and through FELVI.
  • March 16, 2010: For those submitting application with complete language and other test scores.
  • April 16, 2010: For applicants to the Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations, and to the PhD in Comparative Gender Studies submitting applications with complete language and other test scores.

Admissions Process

Admissions process of the CEU Business School

The admissions process for Academic Year 2010/2011 is organized as follows:

Applications submitted by January 3 or January 25, 2010

January 3, 2010: Candidates to CEU’s Erasmus Mundus programs submit applications complete with language test scores.

January 25, 2010: Applications are submitted by students intending/required to take CEU-administered examinations and/or requesting exemption from the English language proficiency requirement.

Step 1: Pre-selection

Applications are evaluated on the basis of the applicant’s academic performance, work experience, recommendations, and expectations of the program and future plans.

Individual interviews may take place, face-to-face or by telephone, throughout the selection process.

After February 26, 2010: Pre-selection decisions are made available via the online application system. Successful applicants having applied to take any CEU-administered admissions examinations are notified of the testing arrangements by email.

Step 2: Testing

March 13, 2010: The CEU-administered TOEFL examination takes place.

March 13, 2010: Department-specific testing takes place:

Applicants who pass the pre-selection and who wish/are required to sit any CEU-administered admissions tests will be notified of the practical arrangements by the local CEU coordinators organizing the tests.

Step 3: Final evaluation

Applicants are evaluated by a departmental selection committee on the basis of past academic achievement, recommendations, English language competency, intellectual merit and general compatibility with the goals of the department.

After April 15, 2010: The final admissions decisions are made available to candidates via the online application system.

CEU does not provide information about candidates’ admission progress before the deadlines given here. Candidates’ information (including test results) is confidential and only available to the candidate concerned.

Applications submitted by March 16, 2010

March 16, 2010: Applications are submitted by students not wishing/required to take the CEU-administered examinations and able to submit their own standardized test scores.

Step 1: Pre-selection

Applicants are evaluated on the basis of their examination scores and complete application files.

Note: Meeting the minimum language or other test requirements does not automatically result in being offered admission to CEU.

Step 2: Testing

Applicants submit applicable standard test scores (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, etc.)

Step 3: Final evaluation

Applicants are evaluated by a departmental selection committee on the basis of past academic achievement, recommendations, English language competency, intellectual merit and general compatibility with the goals of the department.

After April 15, 2010: The final admissions decisions are made available to candidates via the online application system.

CEU does not provide information about candidates’ admission progress before the deadlines given here. Candidates’ information (including test results) is confidential and only available to the candidate concerned.

Applications submitted by April 16, 2010

April 16, 2010: For applicants to the doctoral programs of the Departments of Political Science, International Relations and European Studies, Public Policy, and Gender Studies submitting applications complete with language scores and other applicable test scores. Doctoral decisions are available between April 15 and June 30, 2010.

Applicants who wish to take the CEU-administered examinations (at the locations where administered) need to apply no later than January 25, 2010.

April 16, 2010: For applicants to MESPOM (tbc) and Mundus MAPP who do not wish/are not eligible to be considered for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship. Applications must be submitted complete with language scores.

Note: Candidates to the MESPOM and Mundus MAPP programs who do not wish to be considered for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship are eligible to take the CEU-administered examinations (at the locations where administered) and need to apply no later than January 25, 2010. The final decision will be available after May 15, 2010.

Acceptance by Order of Student Choice

Candidates may apply to two separate CEU departments, and must indicate their first and second preferred choice of department. If the applicant is rejected by the first choice, but accepted by the second choice the student will be offered admission to the second choice. If the applicant is accepted by both, an admission offer will be made by the first choice department, not both. In exceptional cases, and upon written justification, applicants may be permitted to change the order of their preference – notifying the CEU Admissions Office by March 16, 2010.
